Implementing fine wire mesh around vulnerable interfaces such as decks and vents is a critical mitigation strategy for structures located in wildfire-prone regions. Wind-driven embers are a primary vector for igniting homes during a wildfire, capable of traveling significant distances and lodging in small gaps or directly entering attic and crawl spaces through unprotected openings. By effectively blocking these burning particles while still allowing necessary airflow, ember mesh prevents ignition at these key entry points, which are particularly susceptible due to their design or function. Consequently, this simple yet essential measure significantly reduces the overall ignition risk to the structure, substantially enhancing its resilience against the destructive forces of wildfires.

The Basics

Ember mesh represents a critical component in wildfire mitigation strategies for protecting structures. Recognizing that wind-borne embers are a primary ignition source during wildfires, this fine-gauge screening, often constructed from metal alloys, serves as a physical barrier. It is specifically designed to cover vulnerable exterior openings such as vents, eaves, and crawl spaces, effectively preventing hot embers from entering.

Cal Fire

CAL FIRE recommends using non-combustible, corrosion-resistant metal mesh with openings between 1/16 and 1/8 inch (1.6 and 3.2 mm) to cover attic and underfloor vents to prevent embers from entering homes during wildfires. This helps protect homes from ember ignitions, a primary cause of structural loss during wildfires.

Being Proactive

Embers are a primary cause of home ignition in wildfires: Up to 90% of homes lost during wildfires are ignited by windblown embers, according to Wildfire Defense Mesh. These small, burning pieces can travel long distances and ignite flammable materials that accumulate around and within homes. In many wildfire-prone regions, building codes, such as Chapter 7A of the California Building Code, mandate the use of ember-resistant materials.

  • Ember mesh acts as a barrier: It's specifically designed with small aperture openings (typically 1/8 inch or less) to block embers from entering vulnerable areas like vents, attics, crawl spaces, and under decks.
