The Basics

Ember mesh represents a critical component in wildfire mitigation strategies for protecting structures. Recognizing that wind-borne embers are a primary ignition source during wildfires, this fine-gauge screening, often constructed from metal alloys, serves as a physical barrier. It is specifically designed to cover vulnerable exterior openings such as vents, eaves, and crawl spaces, effectively preventing hot embers from entering.

Cal Fire

CAL FIRE recommends using non-combustible, corrosion-resistant metal mesh with openings between 1/16 and 1/8 inch (1.6 and 3.2 mm) to cover attic and underfloor vents to prevent embers from entering homes during wildfires. This helps protect homes from ember ignitions, a primary cause of structural loss during wildfires.

  • Embers are a primary cause of home ignition in wildfires: Up to 90% of homes lost during wildfires are ignited by windblown embers, according to Wildfire Defense Mesh. These small, burning pieces can travel long distances and ignite flammable materials that accumulate around and within homes. In many wildfire-prone regions, building codes, such as Chapter 7A of the California Building Code, mandate the use of ember-resistant materials.

  • Vents: Installing ember-resistant vent covers or screens with fine mesh openings is essential to prevent embers from entering attics, crawl spaces, and other enclosed areas.

  • Gutters: Using ember guards on gutters helps prevent the accumulation of flammable debris and blocks embers from igniting materials in the gutters or roof spaces.

  • Decks and Fencing: Applying ember mesh to enclose areas under decks or as a perimeter fence can help create a buffer against embers and reduce the risk of ignition spreading to the structure.
